Here's a question for you...do you think an actor who plays a character in a movie can know it better then the writer who created the character and/or wrote the script?
Judging from Heath Ledger's Joker i would say that it surely can! But of course they both creates different character. So question is what is THE character which is supposed to be known... I think it's simmilar question to that obvious, which is better: Book or Movie (of one current title). Only thing we can do is to suppose that writer is the only one who knows the character and rest is just interpretation. Sorry, just wrote this and now feel sad to delete it :) Even though it's not an answer to your question... Anyway all the best to 2013 Jake! Perhaps with enough of it, we can solve this out... Tony
Simple answer, No! The writer created the character, who can know it better than the creator? However, whether it's film, TV, or a stage play, those are a collaboration between the writer, director, and actor (as well as everyone else contributing to the effort: lighting, sound, DP, scenic design, costumer, etc). You, as the actor, may find things to enhance your character which is fine as long as the writer and or director agree with your choices. I believe we, actors, are hired to deliver what;s on the page, the character the writer saw when he wrote it. I've seen actors try to take over. They feel their interpretation is better, "They know the character better than the creator". Before you know it they want screen credit for writing and/or directing. Have respect for others and let them do the jobs they were hired to do and they'll respect you as an actor if you simply do what you were hired to do, act.
