If you like theater or just good TV, don't miss the second-season premiere of "Smash." Yes, it has plenty of naysayers, but it did get a Golden Globe nomination for best musical or comedy, which blew the minds of many who thought "Louie" or "Parks and Recreation" were more deserving.... IMHO, "Smash" was great theater, so to speak. Once I got hooked (Week One), I couldn't wait for the next episode--and I consider myself a devotee of quality TV, from "Mad Men" to "30 Rock" (before it jumped the shark last season) to "The Big Bang Theory" (no. 1 rated show that will justifiably be around forever) to Stewart and Colbert to yes, "Louie."
I didn't know JackD. until "Smash," but I think he's great and perfect for the role. I just saw the opener and it was worth the wait for me. A bit melodramatic and far-fetched at times, but what musical theatre isn't.... I thought even "Lincoln" was. And I'm guessing, Jacqueline, you're a singer yourself and therefore can be more critical, but as a writer, I liked most of the music, considering it was purveyed by pros like Jennifer Hudson and Kat McPhee (who upgraded herself considerably since "Idol"), and most is original (it's easier to like music one knows)--but to each his/her own. I'm just hoping "Smash" generates more of an audience this season; it's much harder to churn out week after week than ratings-snatchers, like "The X Factor" and "The Voice."
