Screenwriting : How many projects are you currently working on? by Marcus Hanftaler

How many projects are you currently working on?

I´ve read several times it would be best to always work on several projects at the same time so I wanted to ask you on how many projects you guys are currently working on? And are the projects pretty much the same or are you working on different genres? At what stage are you at those projects and how do you manage that? I am currently working on 3 projects. 2 film features and an episodic tv show. One feature is a high concept Fantasy/Action movie with a lot of CGI. The first pages are already written. The other is a pretty low concept zombie horror-comedy movie. Nothing written yet but the tone, characters and the story arch is set. I need some more ideas on funny horror scenes. Last but not least I have a sitcom I´m working on. The first two seasons story arch is ready and most of the episodes too but not written yet. Right now I´m writing the beat sheets. Need some more sitcom moments but it goes well because it is something I have experienced myself. I usually write on a different project every day depending on what I want to write and what ideas I have. Even though I prefer to write the high concept I found out it would be better to write the zombie movie first because I was told it´s easier to sell that first and later try to sell the high concept. So how do you do it? Would love to read something about you. Marcus

I'm actively working on three projects. Two have completed drafts. One is still being written. I also have another three lined up to write.

I'm finishing up my short film thats premiering tomorrow, but i've already written + started casting for my second

I'm currently working on three screenplays. For the last couple of months, I've been experimenting with this new system where I spend about a week or so working out the story and characters for one then move on to the next project for a week and then the third. So, three weeks later I'd spend a week and bust out the first draft of the first project. Then repeat going back and forth between projects and drafts, giving myself about a week between scripts. So far I have to say it's working pretty well. Everyone has different processes that work better for them, but that might be one to try. I like it.

4 Music videos, Pre-Producing my 3rd feature to begin in 3 months, writing the film to follow. I try to work on a handful of music videos or short films while prepping for a feature. This keeps your technical skills sharp. I also feel like its a good way to flush the bad ideas out so that feature is at its best. Its smart to make a small film first but it has to be totally unique.

Thank you for you comments. There´s some interesting information within them. I still hope there´ll be more. Thanks to David Damen I just started a fourth project. A SciFi/Mystery Short (if you can call a 30 min movie a short...). Because I already worked on it as a novel (but never finished it) I believe it´s easier for me to finish it and maybe get it produced. Who knows?

Sci-Fi's are my favorite. The feature I am doing after this next one is the most unique Sci-Fi I have come across. Good luck, finishing a feature script is no easy task. I am thankful I have writing teams otherwise I could never finish them.

I love action. I love anything but Zombies really. Action can be really good if you think outside of the box like.

I actively try to mix and match my projects... my heart always sinks when people say you have to specialise to get anywhere. I'm working on everything from ebooks for children to poetry to tv scripts to screenplays and blogs. But, er, speaking as an unknown writer - perhaps they're right!
