"With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it. There has to be, otherwise it's just not acting. It's lying." — Johnny Depp. Acting IS lying. Its make-believe.

Milla jovovich doesn't fight in real life like in resident evil, Daniel craig isnt a MI6 agent and tom cruise no doubt isnt as kick-ass as he is in Mission Impossible plus he is shorter too lol
Mind you the only film where Johnny depp has stepped out of normal self is in Edward Scissorhands I think, most of the time, (including as jack sparrow) his voice and accent hasn't changed to the extreme
unlike what Heath ledger had to as The Joker
Milla Jovovich doesn't fight in real life like in Resident Evil but there is a certain amount of herself in Alice. Daniel Craig isnt a MI6 agent but there is a certain amount of himself in Bond, just as was a certain amount of Connery in his Bond, a certain amount of Moore in his Bond and is a certain amount of Brosnan in his Bond. Even when an actor changes things like their voice or accent there is still a certain amount the themselves in the character. Hugh Laurie's "House" and Andrew Lincoln's "Rick Grimes" come to mind.
well that's like all actors then >__>

Seems that way. Maybe Depp has a point?
but acting and lying go in the same category though
you be who you aint
thats kind of the same thing, just johnny depp does it in a positive way not a negative way
acting is both technically
just done in a theatrical sense not a criminal one
man this conversation will go on for hours -__-
what im getting at is, its the SKILL of the actor to LIE to him/herselfs own identity and to the audience of who he really is by becoming another character altogether for entertainment purposes and as a trade.
back in victorian times.....i think, men used to dress as women in acting roles when performing in theatre, does that mean they were transvestites in real life? No.

I think its always good to challenge your acting chops. Too many actors are one dimensional. Some of my favorite actors are the ones that can play any role.
WORD, Gurl. Personally, my ONLY complaint, and recommendation to Mr. Depp, is to point out that there ARE other versions of a British accent than the one to which he ALWAYS gravitates!! ;) >^.,.^<
If not starting from 'one's self', the actor is 'detatched' from the realities that ground the actor to the character and true emotional responses! For instance, Mr. Jeremy Renner is NOT a cannibalistic, cowboy, criminal minded convict, gay, mass murder, Nazi, short fused, idiot ( all characters, which he has masterfully played throughout his career, BUT he has found part of himself to ground to these roles to bring them to vivid life with all honesty in check ). For Mr. Depp, he gravitates wholly to the 'off kilter' roles, for which he is SO famous and usually finds colours, even if slightly varied, to create different personas throughout ( check out his characters in 'The Brave' as opposed to 'The Astronaut's Wife' to 'Finding Neverland' to 'From Hell' to the Gypsy in 'The Man Who Cried' to Dillinger in 'Public Enemies' ). >^.,.^<
WORD, Gurl!! There are SO MANY other varieties of colours than just that ONE!!!! =P >^.,.^<
