I know this sounds like an "easier said than done" comment, but make your own stuff. Really. No one knows what you wanted to make anyway so get a location you can get for close to nothing, write something for just a few people, get a crew and now you're a filmmaker - not just a writer. Producers get more respect anyway. Am I talking no budget? No. Low budget? Yes. Like under $10K? Yes. At least you'll have something done and out there. Don't let L.A. types kid you. First feature I did was $5K in 1993. Supernatural Western called "Justice Be Damned." Shot in three and a half weekends at a broken down western movie set. That impressed a future investor for other things with a $200K budget. I'm not saying it's going to make you a fortune. Or anything at all - at first. But it's a start. If you don't see yourself in a producer/directing/writer's chair, then get others to handle that. First is a low budget one location script - and your casting is SOOOOOO important for something like that. Find talented performers and write things tailored to them if need be. Point is, so many writers try every and anything to compete to get their stuff made - so in this day and age we can do it ourselves. Just make sure your passion is at 1,000% because everyone else will look to you as the ultimate cheer leader for the project. Anyway, I, and others, could go on, but Barb, just get out there and kick ass!
Public nudity can get you arrested unless, of course, you've got a copy of your work to cover up the naughty bits, or better still, a cop's helmet!
