Authors looking for screenwriters

Hey everyone! I work with a lot of indie authors, helping them publish and market their books. Several have asked about getting screenplays created, and I was curious how things go nowadays. Do screenwriters only do adaptations for pay in advance, or would anyone be willing to write the screenplay, pitch it, and keep a percentage of the sales? I currently have three books, all planned series, whose authors are curious about this.

These are authors I am helping to publish, so we definitely own the screen rights. How would one go about creating a partnership? Are we talking about financing the film? I totally agree that a lot of books just were not meant to be movies. But there are a handful where the movie was way better than the book. The two that I am specifically looking at would be excellent as movies, I think. Plenty of action and not an overwhelming amount of dialogue.

Dan, thanks so much for the clarification! That was kinda what we were going for, but with everyone trying to pitch it (the author, agent, publishing company, and screen writer!) So far we have gotten positive reviews, but it takes time with indie publishing. Might be something to pursue further in a couple of months when we have more of a following and get more of the series out there. Thanks again!

Screenwriters (at least the ones you'll want to work with) aren't going to do this. What you need to find is an interested producer.

Chris James

Hello Heidi,

I'm a screenwriter and would be delighted to corroborate with an author and/or yourself on such a project -- so that you HAVE A FINISHED PRODUCT a producer would be interested in.

The fact is that life - and novels written about life in particular - don't always follow proven movie structure. Most often, fairly serious changes have to be made to make it work as a movie. Oscar winning movies - A BEAUTIFUL MIND, a love story, for example - don't tell it how it was. [They divorced before he won the Nobel prize]

No fee upfront. Terms just need to be fair and agreed - then we go for it. Like your authors, I would want to feel any such project was something I could get passionate about - and IS marketable in the first place. We can talk about that.

The Way Forward:

I just go out and buy a copy - or if it's unpublished and under wraps then....

A confidentiality agreement in place, first. Then a brief synopsis would enable a quick YES or NO, not for me. A YES would mean send sample pages. A second YES - the manuscript in exchange for a sample or two of screenplays from me.

And if it doesn't suit me - but does LOOK marketable to me - I would tell you so and put you in touch with any of 50+ trained writers I've worked with for them to chew over.

I would then recommend paying a professional Ex-Hollywood Studio consultant a small fee - to assess marketabilty of our new synopsis and effectiveness of our outline.

Then we could prepare a marketing plan to target the right people that we all use simultaneously. I currently work daily with a producer with 30 movies under his belt.

I currently have a Thriller out there seeking financing and another to complete on request from a producer. Three stories from Nov 2012 to date, are listed here on Stage 32 for a taste. And I hope you'll agree the response above to KW - after only a few minutes thought - shows no lack of imagination.

Let me know if this is of interest -- or drop me a line at

if you wish to get into some detail.

If not, I wish you every success with your authors. It's tough out there!

Best, Chris

Hi Heidi, I've sent you a network request, because I'd really like to discuss this thoroughly with you - I may be able to help you on several fronts with this, depending on the material.
