Looking for advice from professional editors

Hi! I am currently mentoring a student in editing and we have edited an MTV for the band Dear Rouge in their editing contest. It will be extremely beneficial for my student to listen to as many viewpoints as possible regarding the cut. So please give us your comments or criticism on the cut and let us know what we have done right or what went wrong. I graded the spot, so you can comment on the grade too. The video is here: https://vimeo.com/65977991 If you really like it, please let us know. You can like it on vimeo or vote for us here: http://exposure-contest.ca/rankings/?page=4 Look for "Eric Lau" and cast us the vote. Thanks in advance!

Hi Eric. I loved the video and I hardly noticed the edit, which is a good thing. Editing to be seemed spot on apart from a couple of parts.00.08 Man on roof jump cut did not work at all for me. You had a few jump cuts prior to that, which worked until this one on the roof. This next one and anything afterwards is mainly for the grade and finish. I am by no means the best grader but I do notice when a scene in a grade seems removed. The cuts involving the man in the street seemed to dark to me in general. If they can be lifted a bit without killing the blacks that would be great. Also, when he is looking at the band its looks like it does not match the scene. ( 00.31) and at the end. If he had a light spill from the wide shot of the band before that would match it up for me. Lastly, the highlights seem blown out in parts of the exteriors and cafe. I can see what the look is going to be but these are more to do with the polished look of the edit and not the Directors vision. I hope I haven't shot the video and edit down too much as I think its a great video and pace and edit are pretty dam spot on. Gavin

Hi Gavin, thanks for all the honest feedback! I think you are right. The more I look at the jump cut on the roof, the more I think it could be done better.
