Anything Goes : Production halted by Rick Winslow

Rick Winslow

Production halted

We've halted production because we can't seem to get our two main actors to film together because of their work schedules at their regular jobs. We've depended on having them film durning the weekends but the weather has not cooperated. Now that the weather is fine, they can't be there. We're also running into continuity issues with hair, clothing, and things that are partly due to time elapsed during shooting. If we had the budget to pay our actors up front, I'm sure this wouldn't be an issue. But, we are in the red. Anyone have any suggestions? Some we'll need to re-film. But we're way over on time - now being into this over 15 months of filming. Scrap it and start over? Or just drop the filming and cut our losses? Or recover with what we got. I'm listening. tgwtrp@tgwtrp.com

Keep trying. Keep going. You knew going in it was going to be one hell of a challenge.

Erick Hayden

That is the biggest challenge of filming on lo/no budget is you are subject to the actors schedule. You are right, it would be the other way around if you could pay them some. All you can do is persevere and try and keep a tight eye on the continuity as you go so you don't have to do too many reshoots.

Royce Allen Dudley

Get body doubles and shoot OTS and stacked blocking. I'm serious. It works in some circumstance.

We have their work schedules, but they almost work opposite each other at times. They do shift work so... They want to film and we've got some more done since, but it's really spotty. We've even gone so far as to change some of the dialog in their parts of the film to make it easier. Will also be easier in post. The added benefit is an overall more artisitc approach in the first part of the film. I guess sometime things happen for a reason.

Yes, you'll have to resort to tricks that make the scheduling work Like Royce says. This is why I don't like to do long-tail productions with volunteer talent and crew. You can get away with weekenders if you do a short project that only needs one or two actual weekends to complete principal photogaphy. (Voice tracking, ADR, and B-roll can be shot anytime, so if you plan cleverly, you can make this work.) Good luck. Hope you can find the magic it takes to put this thing in the can. That is the nature of the game.
