Teetering on the edge of taking that first acting class. I have realized that my fear has not been making a fool of myself --I have done that many times already--but discovering that I have zero talent after having already wading into the shallow end of the acting pool of background work. Curiosity will be what pushes me across the threshold of the acting classroom. I'll let you know.
Go for it. Take the leap and discover your true talent and potential. Good luck!
Thanks for the encouragement, Wanda!

I found that out as well. I was my own worst critic when I did theater acting in high school. Everyone came up to me afterwards and said they loved the portrayal of my character.

Go for it Denny, you are only as good as you believe you are... Keep believing. You have got a unique look my friend. If the face fits.... they say. Be brave and trust yourself... You can do it!
Thanks Jim and Janet. I think my apprehension has been fueled partly by the mystique of that first audition, which may be odd considering that I have had a couple of very exciting scenes that I had no idea of in advance and was expected to react to the principal actor, and I felt comfortable with that scenario. All I had to do was respond the same way as if it was real life. Of course the only gauge of success I had was the director didn't run me off the set as he screamed in frustration at the idiot extra.

I worked for 35 years on the other side of the camera..and observed the 'great and the good' going through your very concerns..I now live in Budapest and construct jewelry for films BUT have joined several agencies and just made my first appearance..also last week auditoned for a British film here..I never realised there were so many way to say 'Hello' If yet another book be written about acting a good title might be 'On Hundred Ways to Say Hello' Good luck Denny..Thelast line of a musical Brigadoon is 'If you love someone deeply enough, anything is possible ,even miracles'... It is true.. Anything is possible..My long life at almost 80 has proved it time and time again..
Thanks for the wise words and encouragement, Mark and Paul. You are, of course, right. I appreciate it.
Well, the deed is done...or at least begun. I had my first-ever audition Tuesday. The ice has been broken. Time now for the first acting class. Thanks again for the support.

Thanks Janet!
You are welcome mate! You do have the LOOK ya know.... and I would imagine that alone will take you places....
Yes, I want to know the answer to that too.... what was the audition???
Based on a graphic novel. I guess I did okay. I have nothing to compare it to except my own interpretation of the sides, which could have been read in several ways. I went with how I thought the character would have said the lines. I could have been completely wrong...or not.

Denny...I could cast you in a film without you studying Acting...I look for a Human -being...acting is a world that is filled with insecurity and a one day you will be ready...you are ready every day of your life...I have worked with Homeless souls and put them in my films...the best way for you to REALLY be a working actor is to AUDITION for a Community theater...when you are cast ...you will create the role...BEING CAST gives you a special confidence that Studying and auditioning have no value...Trust me...LEARN YOUR LINES and do it YOUR WAY ...yes...connect with the POWER of YOUR SOUL...and allow the words written to be born from you...in that moment STEAL the words...make them your own...Writers pray that their words will BE BORN from the Soul playing the character...and that is you Denny...even DeNiro agrees with me...watch just 58 seconds... http://youtu.be/S4K2znuYjwI
The primary reason for the classes is that here in the Atlanta area, every agent wants training before they sign talent. I agree that community theater is a valuable place to start, but I have found a class with a respected acting coach who will allow me to audit some classes, so there is nothing to lose be doing it. Thanks for the advice. I do appreciate it.
Dear Denny....just do what you think is best...just so you know...it's not about getting a agent...it's about being in a play and having producers and directors see you and cast you...then you get an Agent...Showcase ...Showcase...showcase...AMEN
I agree. At the end of the day it's about the work and getting experience. Having an agent doesn't necessarily guarantee you getting work. Join a theatre group, audition for student films. Network and meet the people who are doing things. Commit to that and the agents will find you.
Phyllis A. Collmann-Thank You, I am not an actress, I am the author of a wonderful Pioneer Series of 8 books. The story is about a 17 year old girl living in 1880. It is exciting and adventurous.

Congratulations, I hope you gain atleast one New great tool to add to your toolbox!
Thanks, Michelle. I am absorbing all the great input here and I use every day to learn more.
I'm not much into acting but I would guess that the same approach works in the behind-the-camera fields as well.
