Screenwriting : So I've been writing short fil… by Grant Reid

So I've been writing short fil…

So I've been writing short films on and off for around a year and a half now (to fit around my studies) and I've never asked for anyone other than a few select people to read them. I'm not one of these people who take "that's excellent Grant, well done" well. I think being criticised and defending what you're writing to be more uplifting and productive for feedback. Anyway, one of the reasons I haven't uploaded anything yet is because of: a) how amateur I really am at this stuff, b) I haven't got an audience substantial enough on here yet (is that vain?), and c) I don't believe I've formatted to the right house style, yet it's still largely understandable. But I've sent some work to a few trusted people who'll feed back to me soon and once drafts have been polished they'll be on here. They might not be the finished article, but as long as there's potential in them why not.

ill be more than happy to have a read pal if you want some feedback.

Grant Reid

Thank you, I'll send some your way as soon as I can!

Grant Reid

Perhaps I've phrased it wrong (not a good start), but I mean in the way that I'd be able to explain why I've written what I've written. If it still doesn't come across the way I'd intended then obviously I would change that particular area. I'm not oblivious nor is it futile to criticise my work as I believe that is more productive than both a stubborn writing approach and a lazy proof-reading.

Start reading scripts. If you wanted to be a great architect, you'd probably start looking at designs from the past and designs from your contemporaries and learning about design, by what works and what doesn't. Nobody knows it all when they start out and even as they become more experienced. Learning is a constant process. When it comes to feedback, you need to separate yourself from your work. If someone gives you constructive criticism, don't take it personally. A site like Simplyscripts is very useful in getting feedback on your work. There are people of all different levels and abilities involved - like all feedback - you to need to learn with time, what is useful, over what isn't.

Congrats on the work you've done over the past year and a half, Grant. Finding people who will give you constructive feedback is invaluable. I'm like you in that I always want to hear how I can improve something. Like Eoin suggested, start reading scripts to help you with formatting. I'd also recommend checking out John August's site (http://www.johnaugust.com/). Keep up the good work.
