Distribution : Whats it for and how does it work? by Joseph V Sultana

Whats it for and how does it work?

At first glance these maybe two stupid questions but seriously, what is a distributor for? Is it to get money or is it to get my film into the theatres on TV or DVD? Maybe a bit of both!? So how does it work then? What if I don't need any money to make a film? Lets say I've already made it and its been edited. With all the new ways of distributing digitally on the rise, Netfilx, iTunes, Vimeo etc. How about self distribution? Thats an area up and coming. So back to the original stupid questions... Whats it for and how does it work?

I'm interested in hearing the answers. I just wrapped up post-production on my independent film and was just looking into distribution.

Dana Lin

I was just given this book, it's pretty interesting, it tells you the basics of distribution and why you need it. From what I've read, you should know a little bit of it before you spend all your time & money in making (or even writing) a film (that you actually want more than just your mom and friends to see). After all, isn't the point of getting a film made is so that people can see it and you don't go bankrupt while at it? Here's the link to the book: http://www.amazon.com/How-Make-Money-Making-Movies/dp/0832950203

Traditionally a film distributor is the company that would give you an advance and/or buy your negative and markets your movie to exhibitors like theaters and VOD outlets. With the glut of independent movies being made distributors now focus on buying the final product preferably at a film market or festival. If you are fortunate to have something that creates a buzz then you might end up with several distributors bidding for your movie. Most independent movies made do not sell and even some of the ones that sell do not recoup the investment making for some very unhappy relatives. Self-distribution is another way to getting your movie to an audience. It’s a lot of work and it will keep you away from your next project. There is a new kind of distributor like Indie Rights for example that will take your movie and upload it to just about all streaming outlets and they just take a small percentage of the rental fees. One big advantage is that the filmmaker does not incur any out of pocket expenses and are free to continue on their next project. If you have a built-in audience then why not try to self-distribute? I would invest in something like Jerome Courshon’s DVDs on the subject if you want to go that route. Bottom line, you have to have a well-executed compelling story and you have to do your homework and your due diligence. Now get back to making your movie.

Lin and Mike thank you both for your contribution. Its good of you to take time out. Will look at the book and into self distribution and see what we see. Best regards joe

Distribution is a specialty. Yes, you, the filmmaker can self distribute. A distributor has access to advertising funds you may not. A distributor has contacts you may not. A distributor may be able to include your film in a catalogue not available to you. A distributor know the worldwide markets that you may not fully understand. Boiled down; a distributor pays you (the filmmaker) for the rights to get your film out into the market place in order to make money. They recoup their investment off the top and then split revenue with you. You do your job (making the film) - they do theirs (getting a paying audience). Or you could do both jobs.
