Screenwriting : Who will be my industry angel? by Erik N. Harper

Who will be my industry angel?

I have written several screenplays, manuscripts, stage plays, commercials, and TV concepts and scripts. Looking for representation. I have begun making contacts but as we all know that is barely the start. I write daily and could work on any ongoing or beginning projects. I am great at breaking up writer's block, and might be able to help those of you cursed. Why haven't I sold anything yet? If you can answer that then you should be my advisor.

Eoin O'Sullivan

Have you entered your work in any competitions? Have you sent your work for coverage?

Erik N. Harper

Yes both. Received positive feedback. Didn't win but had very helpful feedback and a request for other things. Have had 3 different screenplays reviewed. Pretty much same thing. Just waiting on the right set of eyes to see something.

Eoin O'Sullivan

The reason I ask, is that i'm trying to get a gauge of where you are, writing wise. Placing in a competition, or getting a consider or recommend in coverage, is an indicator of your writing ability to potential representation. Remember, these people are busy. They need a way to identify writers they want to work with, from the sea of hopefuls out there. Agents want writers who are easy to work with and are writing marketable concepts. So, back to you. Can you demonstrate this to a potential agent?

Erik N. Harper

Thanks so much for the valued information. Very specific. I will look into it. Is The Happy Writers on Stage 32 or is there a better place, email, or other that is a better way to contact him or someone with their company.?

Wayne Taylor

The blacklist site is frequently visited by mgrs and agents

Wayne Taylor

I thought the Happy Writer site is for coverage?

Wayne Taylor

I don't really know much about the Happy Writer site or how much Joey has helped the careers of new writers, but the Blacklist has helped a number of people for $75. I think the HW site charges significantly more. Im not downing them just throwing out alternative sites.

Kaz Drysdale

How about adding this into the above equation? 1. Connections? 2. You get what you pay for? Do you think of these things when you start shopping your script - with a hope and a prayer? Just wondering what you guys think?

Eoin O'Sullivan

Aside from who is the best person to push your script and kick start your career - the question still remains, how good is your writing and how marketable is your concept? Answer those 2 questions honestly, or have them answered honestly, before you go start kicking down doors looking for representation for your babies.

Wayne Taylor

That's the blacklist. Your script is graded by pro readers in diff categories. If it scores 8 or above in any of those catagories you're added to the list sent out to Pros. The scores are based on marketability. It's for those who think their script is ready.

Eoin O'Sullivan

Key words being, 'those who think their script is ready' - their are 1000's of writers who think they have a marketable concept - before you start sending your work off to The Blacklist, get a grounding of where your writing is and look at whats selling. Otherwise, this process will lead to frustration, without ever understanding what is actually wrong. Ask yourself, is this what YOU are doing, are you working on concepts that can sell.

Wayne Taylor

Most people wont sell their script. A great svript gets you noticed and leads to other work. Im not saying the blacklist is for everyone just those trying to break in. There is no sure fire way to know what is marketable because it only takes one produver, manager, or agent to like your writing and everything is subjective

Eoin O'Sullivan

Horror and Comedy, 2 marketable genres - if you want to 'break in', but aren't even writing material in these genres, well, the odds are stacked against you already.

Wayne Taylor

Because they are usually low budget. It doesn't mean we should all be writing just those two genres. a great script will get you in no matter tje genre

Eoin O'Sullivan

No, it doesn't mean we should all be writing these, but don't expect to break in, on the merits of anything outside of these alone - if the market demands something in particular, then have something to suit that market. That applies in any business.

Wayne Taylor

We will just have to agree to disagree.

Erik N. Harper

Ok this thread got off point. Eoin I have done a lot of prep not only in making my writing more marketable but also in my networking. I have completed works and several others I have done my homework and know what is being looked at and wrote original and creative works with marketing in mind.
