Legalities involved in writing an inspired by a True Story

I am a medical doctor, watercolor artist, former interior designer moving in to the world of visual film making and working on a script that is a true story. However, after attending the World Conference in L.A this year, I understood that writing a personal true story could involve some legal preparation and signatures of release. Therefor, I am now starting a second Drama with similar plot but changing the characters and events so as to not embark on the lawyer scene later. Anyone have advice on the subject of legal implications involved in writing an inspired by a true story with myself as the Protagonist?

First, don't call it a story based on true events, just call it a story. If it's a good story, write it. Change the names, location, maybe a gender or two. People's perception is different, so those involved in past events likely will not see themselves in your story. If they do, deny and claim it is merely coincidence.
