Disturbance & Delight: a solo performance & writing workshop

In town to perform @United Solo Fest, 2 artists on the cutting edge of queer, cis, sex-positive, gender, sexuality and relationship performance and writing offer a solo performance and writing workshop at Bluestockings. https://www.facebook.com/events/536638493080999/ Queer, positive exiled writer/performer thom vernon (Seinfeld, Grace Under Fire, General Hospital, The Fugitive, etc.) teams up with performer/writer/educator Laura Zam (NPR, Washington Post, Huffington Post) to lead the two hour session, November 4, 2013, 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Using writing exercises and various performance techniques, the workshop will mine material through anonymous participant questions about sexual health, sexual healing, sexual function, relationships, gender, identity, or anything else related. Participants might create a monologue, a scene, a song, a movement piece or some other troublemaking device. Includes teaser performances from thom’s queer, southern gothic show "The Drifts Live: the novel onstage" called ‘hilarious and heartbreaking…stricken and dangerously poetic’ based on the novel "The Drifts" (Coach House Books, 2010) lauded by the Globe and Mail as “magnificent” and Laura’s “Married Sex”, a humorous journey of sexual education, health and healing also at United Solo Festival. In this hands-on workshop, artists and explorers at any level will learn new ways to unlock and transform the ties that bind into creative writing and performance. Using their own work to demonstrate, thom vernon and Laura Zam leads participants through the minefield of silence and erasure as we pick up writing and performance tools that any artist in any medium can use. A previous workshop participant appreciated, ”Thom’s willingness to believe in my story—my ability to tell it. He didn’t treat me like an amateur. He helped me to care about writing.” “Married Sex” by Laura Zam plays Nov. 5, 9 p.m. "The Drifts Live: the novel onstage"at United Solo Festival, Nov. 6, 7 p.m. Tickets for both shows at http://unitedsolo.org/. RSVP to info@bluestockings.com. Free.
