A fair warning for those of you new comers to the business, do not end up like this guy. A graduate f a certain college here in Orlando was a up and coming producer. He hired myself and my business partner to work on a music video, of which I also supplied the Lighting and Grip gear as well as did the Lighting Design for the video. For the past two months he has been dodging us, and telling us different lies, as well as slandering us and blaming the artist for not having the payment. The artist is not happy with the edit he did, he is also the editor. He charged the client overtime, did not pay us for it, argued with me on a extra days rental and is refusing to pay for that, among a list of other things to long to go into here. He is ailing to understand certain things and tomorrow I will be contacting the artist to inform him that a lien is going to be put against his video and he will be unable to use any of the the footage we shot thanks to said producer shorting everyone on their checks. This person has no business license, and no insurance, which I will also be explaining to the artist when I speak to him tomorrow. He has foolishly slandered us in emails, and can not seem to keep his story straight. He forgot to sign and date my short check so I had to take 3 hours out of my day the day after he paid me over 60 days late to get him to sign it. I have already spread the word to all the rental houses in the area to which they have all responded with we will not rent anything to him ever. He will most likely now need to find a different career path. Folks, this is a very small business, word spreads like wildfire. Don't be this guy, its because of people like him our business has a bad reputation.
Sadly there are far too many people who ignore the fact that show business is indeed a 'business' and the accepted principles of fair play do apply. Having friends work on your projects for free (and returning the favor), is one thing, expecting everyone to work for free is quite another. Unfortunately, as a writer, I know that many times people ignore the warning signs in order to get something made and get their foot in the door - the reality is, however, if a 'producer' can't or won't pay a nominal fee for your services how are they possibly going to fund any credible project?
Yes its true, I have helped out friends before and not been screwed over, o course unfortunately those projects never went anywhere, but in this case it was not a friend it is a guy trying o break into the business who go's to the church of another client of ours that we do production work for. So to me it is worse that this guy is pulling this and claiming to be a Christian. I'm not overly religious but I'm pretty sure Christians are not supposed to lie and steal like that
