New to Stage 32 and thought I…

New to Stage 32 and thought I would give it whirl. I'd like to know more of your stories on getting started, where you are now and the struggles you face in one of the most competitive markets in the world.

Brandi Alyssa Young

I am an actress in the south, and my struggles have been looking too old for my age. I think that is finally almost over, I am going to graduate soon then I can work as an adult and it won't matter as much. Now I would very much like to get to LA, but that is a struggle too, being I am a minor and all. I am very good and can only get better, but as we all know, it can be more about being in the right place and time than talent. I'll get there, I am sure. Saw your reel, fractured, had me mesmerized.

I am aspiring to become a TV Producer and people alwats say they will read your ideas and get back to you. Or they promise to give you feedback, then act too busy to read the ideas. but in the meatime, I know they are plotting ot do the TV series on their own. How does one find an agent? How does one find that right person willing to give youa real chance and make some good TV? Just really disappointing.....

Brandi Alyssa Young

Femi: Well, first off..NEVER give your ideas to anyone without having them copy-written or set up with the writers guilds. Then at least you have someplace to stand when you know they stole your idea. It is definitely a tough business. Very competitive, first and foremost, if this is your passion, never give up, be persistent and be willing to get critiqued and learn from it to make yourself better. Get lessons, go to workshops, find a mentor. I don't know about an agent for a producer, maybe someone else can help there. As for finding the right person, that is similar to acting, it's just about being in the right time, and place with that right person, when you click you will know. To have more chances being in the right place and finding that right person, network, network, network. Like this. But go to your local meetups and you need to keep going consistently for people to get to know your face and eventually you and to trust you. As you have already obviously been burned, it is the same for most everyone out there, it takes a lot of time to build those relationships, cuz everyone has horrible backstabbing stories for themselves. But don't despair, you will make progress and those tiny baby steps will be very much celebrated! I hope that helps.

thanks for the quick response. I understand exactly what you are saying. The one thing I didnt know was that I could register my ideas with the Writers Guild...had no idea about this. I will get on that shortly. Trying to get a mentor is also challenging. I am hoping this site will produce one for me. :). thanks and pls keep in contact. Happy New Year...

Brandi Alyssa Young

Femi: Oh, I am sorry, I am not sure about registering just your ideas with the wga, I was under the impression you had something written. Better ask someone who does more screenwriting that question or check out their site for the answer. You don't have to be a union member to cruise a lot of their site and send an email asking that question, if you cannot find an answer. [www.wgaeast.org/][1] Hope that you find that answer. I do have many ideas written, but thats all. I have the correct format and eveything, I just do know what to do with it. How do I get it into the right hands. I am hoping to stay diligent in my dreams and hope for the best. 2012 has got to be my year. :) I already reached out to several people on this site. Hopefully someone will respond with some answers on where to go anf how to proceed further. Thanks for taking time out of your day to even respond to me. I really appreicate it.

Brandi Alyssa Young

Maybe try some literary agents..but I'd ask around here first. No problem, in the eyes of Hollywood I am a newbie too!

Femi K. Donelson

I just reached out to a Columbia Professor regarding classes in TV writing. Thanks for the heads up on wga website. Now I am waiting for some responses. Please keep in contact with me. Thanks again Brandi.

Brandi Alyssa Young

No problem, Femi. I can be found here or FB if you need me.

I went on WGAregistry and alll I need to do is send $20 for each idea, they will register the idea and send the registration # to me. That will protect me. Thanks again...

Brandi Alyssa Young

YAY!! I am so glad you found an answer and I could help in some small way. :)

Brandi Alyssa Young

You have to keep going. I know this is my life, I NEED to keep going, it's like breathing, not an option for me.
