i think music heighten almost all experiences, as long as you get to make the proper selections. i used to play classical music, identifying the composers to students/then allowed it to play at a low volume during the core subject matter lessons. i select music before auditions to free my spirit to play, according to the mood evoked.
Thanks guys, I really wondered. I listen before I write and when I am stuck, but never during. And yeah, setting the mood is important. I am a crazy lady when I write, I become the story and live in that world.
thankful. i like to think that minds were inspired during my years in the classroom as a fulltime, self contained teacher. we have to provide a degree of stuctured learning for ourselves. as Wendy said elsewhere, she must be honned in & focused, dare i say selfish w/ time, in order to hone our craft. limit distractions & connect on a deeper level. thanks for sharing!
Before, during, and after depending what is playing. But when I really need to concentrate the music goes off. This is usually during the revision stage and when a specific scene is giving me trouble.
I would think one should listen to the genre of music befitting the topic of one's story. Should one listen to Bach or Vivaldi while writing a western, shootouts could become too formal while cowpokes and horses might take on curious traits rarely found in the old west.
I have a Pandora station that I've labeled My Writing Station. It is seeded with Howard Shore, Enya, George Winston, and Loreena Mckinnett. those four seeds seem to provide the kind of background music that works for me.
I can't listen to music while I'm writing, but I do when I'm outlining and storyboarding. The type of music depends on the genre of that project I'm working on and usually the music helps me build the tone of each scene. Like a soundtrack. That's my favorite part of the writing process! Besides, of course, typing those two beautiful words, 'Fade Out'!
I always use music when I write; different music for different themes, it helps me get into a certain kind of mood and to inspire me. For example I listen to heavy metal when writing violence or aggressive scenes, classical for emotional scenes and so on. I also use folk music for inspiration if my story has characters set in a certain era or hail from a certain culture. I think it works great. If I'm really focused, I don't even realize I've listened to music until long after I've finished a writing session. Does anyone else notice this?
When I write I like the silence. The silence is like a clean slate that I fill with pages of my screenplays. I lose myself for hours in silence. If music is playing I find myself guessing how long I've been writing by the number of songs that have played. Also absolutely no clocks. Otherwise I watch the clock instead of concentrating on the page.
I listen to music as I write, always.

George Lucas says he wrote Star Wars to Classical music.

I listen to 80's music as I write. Great online station
Yeah, like Whitesnake's "Here I go Again." Oh, did I just date myself?
I play Zappa or the Dead when I write!
Yann Tierson. If I'm writing dialogue, having some background music can help me feel where i want the tension to go.
Yep, I do.
I listen to music whilst writing infact - not before. But sometimes I do stop it if I need to concentrate more.

I'm addicted to music. Music tells me stories and enhances my creativity. Love soft rock, 60-80's.
Come on Richard, crank that music up... you'll love it:)

I do and I usually listen to music that fits the story I'm writing.

Pandora will time out after a while. I don't seem to notice it when I'm writing. When I wish I am writing I notice it immediately,

Sound is every where and I do use background music for a steady grounding to stay focused and as a mental timer too.
