I need your opinions please. I applied for a scriptwriting job for a tv network in Indonesia. they were planning on making a family sitcom (30 mins, studio based, 13 eps per season. each episode created in under 2 days incl. story bible ) at my interview, they asked me to come up with the whole thing (treatment, xters, setting, plot) plus a 5 minute script in under 3 days. because of time limit, i sent it with what i think is under my satisfactory draft. they emailed back 4 days after that and said that i got all the structure and scenario as standard but from the story side, it wasnt funny enough. they want something like disney. and they gave me another oportunity to make it more humour until the weekend, (2 days) i asked what kind of comedy they were looking for, sitcomwise where its by verbal or slapstick. they wrote back, repeating like disney, (which is what i did in the first place.) I've sent in my second draft on Tuesday because of other engagement in the weekend and havent heard from them since. Am I the one who doesnt understand or are they demanding of a clueless subject? Adding to that, I dont even know if i'm hired yet. Input welcome. Cheers! N.S
To add, i think writers are paid per month but i dont know how much. and the studio is FAR away from where I live.
Sounds like a lot of "Free" work for just a "chance" at a job. They could have you jumping through hoops with the possibility of a job. I would suggest do no more work. Again, why would they hire someone so far away and over the internet who they have not met in person? Are there no writers in Indonesia and if it's on a "network" they have no money for development? Sounds fishy to me.
Sounds like they're pulling a fast one on you. I would do no more work without pay. Usually the writer gets hired before development starts. Sounds to me like they're trying to get you to write it & then have their own people make it.
I went through something like this a couple of years ago. They wanted me to magically hand them funny scripts overnight, literally. It was the worst and I left the job. A couple of months later, I heard they went through several writing teams and directors for just two half-seasons. Nobody remembers the show anymore. If they ever contact you again, be sure to demand payment. But Mark and Gianna are right, stay away from them! :)
