I would say creativity and observation. With creativity, nowadays, you have to go above and beyond in order to hold and keep an audience. With observation, a good film gives the audience something they can relate deeply too. Seeing that the hero was strong enough to over his/her obstacles gives people in the audience hope to overcome their own. =D
simple; a great, carefully executed story that appeals to people through time.
