Hmm movies.....and how they get to you

So yesterday a thought had came to me on the distribution of a film, as I am getting more and more interested in the idea of creating my own work or the idea of collaborating on a film. The more theaters a company can get to play their film the more people have a chance to see it. Not alot but few films (in general) people havent been able to see cause the movie wasnt playing in their area or state. But in the International market they seem to be soaking up the movie trying the get the company to play the film in their area. So that brings me to this, why does it seem a film has a better chance being shown internationally rather than "in theaters everywhere" of United States? Any thoughts on this subject would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

Hi Josh. I think filmmakers are wise to consider - if they are self-distributing - to release their films as a 'one night only' event, instead of trying to get a longer run, which is much harder to sustain (if not impossible) on an indie budget. Spend your resources promoting that single screening, and make it more than 'just' a screening (ie bring in your star, partner with another organization to tie in, etc.). I wish I knew the answer to your question about 'why do films seem to have a better chance being shown internationally rather than in theaters everywhere in the US.' Our film (www.belowzeromovie.com) has just started to sell internationally. We are still finalizing our domestic distribution. We are building our audiences one city at a time in North America, and using the film festivals and press to achieve that.

In our case, the initial theatrical run (~30 cities) happened as a result of both our theatrical distributor (Abramorama) and the work of locals from the core community of people which our documentary highlighted. We worked closely with local contacts to get the word out and have a high confidence that the run would be decently attended. Beyond that, we're pursuing a four wall screening strategy with the core audience, and have had the DVD released by Breaking Glass Pictures in a number of online outlets. Feel free to download and read the four wall release plan that we came up with from our web site (click on the "Host A Screening" link). It may or may not be a model that would work for your film, due to the unique nature of our audience. http://www.americanharmonythemovie.com

I am looking for feedback on providing a secure method of distributing films on the internet, in Theatres or even on cell phones - we are trying to bring the small town Theatre and have the technology to do so using very low cost projectors and no film so very green. - how do I get film makers involved - what is reasonable fee to charge - what if we pay the initial group back 100% for helping this get going? We know the compression is amazing and the quality superb on any media .. I even sent dvd quality to kenya using only 360kbs and have done 80kbs *** We can offer a service by which we can go direct to the venue via the web and only allow 1 showing or a select number of views etc - this is ideal for doing a film fest on the cheap or giving all ticket holders the ability to see every film. Please contact me - not sure of the posting rules so I won't put my email here.
