Screenwriting : Negotiating a contract by Bob Wagner

Negotiating a contract

I know I've read somewhere in the blogosphere that an agent is more interested in you for continuing income from writing assignments than for a single sale of a spec. But if lightning does strike and you sell a spec -- and you're not particularly interested in writing assignments -- would it be better to have the contract negotiated by an agent or an entertainment attorney? Would an agent even be interested? I know agents traditionally get 10 percent of the total. Are entertainment attorney fees about the same? More? Less? Also, I'm presuming that whomever you chose, it would be best if that person is in the same area as the purchaser if the writer does not live in the LA area, right?

Thanks, Ben. Good information. Just what I was looking for. Not that I have an offer, but like a tornado or hurricane, if a spec sale drops out of the blue, that's not the time to be figuring out how to deal with it.
