Oh it's absolutely a time suck, but I've been known to work out kinks in my stories while on my various social networks. It kind of depends on what you're doing with your social networks. Some people spend it chatting with friend, etc. Others use it to learn stuff and work out issues.
Andrew, No not at all. I have just noticed, that in my short 2 months trying out FB that all feeds were about them and pics of them. Hence the narcissism comment. Nothing of substance. You, on the contrary do not self promote or triple post, self promo. Rather you share useful info, one of a small handful on 32-here that actually brings info to the table instead of self promo. As I feel FB and the likes do not... "As if I care that One updates me that they've stopped to shove ice cream in their portly faces....." Moreover, texting and driving takes more lives then drinking and driving. Updating FB or LOL on Twitter? I have some clever slogans about them and might just head over to T-shirt R us and sell them over there. The name eludes atm.
To be a grommet between you and Jac, I think Jac is right as the attention span of the average has dwindled to 184 characters. There are even websites that use that as max character for posting in their forums. How can one elaborate, or have a comprehensive conversation with someone at 182 Characters? Oh I know .... LOL, ATM and BRB Right?
I didn't think it was about me, that was a bad attempt at humour. Narcissism, thinking your comment was about me? :D I totally get what you are saying and it's unfortunate that language has been so changed by the internet but many linguists suggest that internet speak is actually changing language in a way that many people have tried to do for centuries before the internet came along. Like another article I posted called "Because internet".
You got me...Now I get it. Enough about you, lets talk about me....I think it started with Rap and kids trying to emulate Rappers with limited vocabulary, as they thought it was cool. IE: For real, or I-8 then. Now comes the net. In the USA they have phased out Handwriting, as most US students are to inept to learn cursive, so they have just about done away with it in the Public school system. I guess they figure if it is going to be written it will just be typed. ??? Pretty soon LOL and emoticons will be 'the-norm' on a job application.
I'm willing to bet actually that things like LOL and emoticons will become the job application equivalent of swear words. Part of those things you can't put in certain situations. You're right, hand writing is becoming less used and taught in schools, but given the per-valance of touch technology and keyboards, it's not as necessary in today's world. You definitely still have to teach it to children but it will probably be taught by parents rather than in schools.

Narcissism going full sail!
That comment was directed at me right Simon? :D
You think so? You don't just think social networks are a marketing tool and not a creative hindrance?

'Phased out handwriting' - that is a terrifying prospect.

I used to feel like a robot. My doctor advised me a 'digital diet'. Now I can feel again. :)
