I've been offered a role as a lead villain in an indy feature. Pay isn't great but the distibution channels are in place with negototiations on regarding % of distribution profit. The villain is based on an actual bad guy that rules the streets in my city. He and his child were gunned down five years ago and it appears as if his henchmen have parted ways since his death. The character I play has a different name but we will be shooting(filming) at a few of his past hangouts and even his old house. Will any of those loyal to him see this as "just a movie" or am I putting my life in danger ? Sorry for the paranoia but I'm married with a 7yr old daugher...
I've decided to take my chances and make the movie, after all its 'just a movie' :-)

I can understand your concern. Keep in mind the Wire based a lot of characters on real criminals and there were no repercussions. I think that, if anything, as long as you do the character justice you'd only get respect for it. Best of luck and I hope it goes well :)
Oh wow, yikes. I don't know. Since you're a dad, I understand your fears. The fact you're filming at almost the same locations makes me worry. I have a story I could write about a mob guy but he told my friend he didn't want it written yet. So I'm not writing it because I worry that if I write it, they'll come after me. So I'm not doing it. And truthfully this story would be HUGE. So I hear you. I'd say be sure it's worth it, that's all.

The character will have a beard, different name and speak with a South African accent so I don't feel too concerned. Thanks for the honest advice.
My sixth sense was right, I turned down the role. The one co-star who was also acting in the movie had a stroke but is recovering well. He was also the producer who was going to spill the beans about this deceased gangsters dealings. He was also somebody the gangster knew and had dealings with when he was alive....My luck has changed, I recently landed a small role in Homeland season four, about 6 days on set, working alongside with Miss Danes :-)
