Hey all - As a regular member of Simplyscripts, I'm in the process of launching a new Blog, dedicated to showcasing noteworthy shorts (and the occasional feature length). There's no rush on this - I'm expecting it to go live in about a month. BUT - one thing that we're looking to do is only feature the absolute BEST. If the blog develops buzz, it's our hope that it will eventually become a go-to place for producers looking for quality scripts. Granted, that's gonna take time to develop. I'll also be hitting up the film schools to raise awareness of the site. Given that I (and most other readers/reviewers) have full time jobs, it's going to be hard to dig through the submissions to find the best. But if you really feel you have something of note - either yours or a recommendation for someone else - please do send it my way. This is a service that I strongly feel our industry needs... I agree... But how do you judge what is a really great script? How will the site weed through all the bullshit scripts like Simplyscripts? I love where your heads at, but how do you find the cream of the crop when it's all subjective?
Sounds interesting, there's few sites for short scripts out there so I applaud this. Thing is, everyone thinks they have a great script so I think you're going to get swamped. Further to Gary's good point, it would be good to know what genres you're looking for. I write a lot of shorts which are more on the exploitation spectrum so it's pointless me submitting scripts to judges looking for artistic stuff. Maybe you could cycle through genres on a monthly basis to control the submission rate?
Hey Gary - I totally agree, judging scripts is pretty subjective. And there's alot of flotsam out there (on Simplyscripts and otherwise - that's basically just the nature of the writing beast. :) ) A writer myself, I've pulled together a core group of people whos opinion I trust and value for part of the judging process. As moderator, I'd be final arbiter (kind of like Carson is for Scriptshadow) - but I'll definitely be listening to input and opinions and not playing script God. :P (I'll also probably be looking for guest reviewers as well as scripts. The only criteria. Be a damned good writer capable of writing an entertaining and informative blurb. And a good judge of scripts....

Hey CJ - thanks! :) Speaking as the one who's going to set the standards on this, I can say that all I care about with scripts is that 1) It's written well stylistically, 2) Tells a good story that hasn't been done to death 3) Actually has characters that are well developed, unique or interesting in some way. We've already been floating the idea in the core group of setting aside time for each genre. I'll grant you, I'm not personally a fan of torture porn - so I doubt we'll be showcasing much of that. Then again, a short script with a truly decent twist - if written well - definitely wouldn't be out of the running. Blood and gore I'm fine with; as long as it's organic to the story. RE: getting flooded with scripts. Yeah, that I am somewhat worried about. :P But one of the tacts we're going to take is also reach out to contests and coverage services, and see if they can provide some sort of quality filter by recommending some writers to us for consideration. (Though not providing the review directly.)

Hi Lyse - VERY sorry for the delay in responding. I just saw this... We've now been going for a month...AND I'm very happy to say we've already gotten three short scripts optioned for writers. As some of you may recall I gave a shout out to Shootin' the Shorts in a recent Stage 32 blog post. I can't support Janet enough here, what she is doing is a wonderful opportunity for those writing shorts. I've had two scripts featured, one recently, and optioned the first within a month, shortly after I had another director in the queue should the first option fall through.
Just wanted to post a quick tip on this for Stage 32 members. Someone messaged me about the issues hosting a pdf suitable to submit to the STS form. If you upload your short script to your loglines section here on Stage 32, you can simply scroll down to the "View Screenplay" link and submit that URL. Make sure to credit Stage 32 were you can though, free script hosting is a rare treat.
