Filmmaking / Directing : can I get some quotes on crewrates? by Don Walker

Don Walker

can I get some quotes on crewrates?

I'm budgeting my second micro budget feature and want to include those essential crew spots, that I learned the hard way, are always needed. So what are the ballpark rates for 1st AD, MAKE-UP AND HAIR ARTISTS, WARDROBE, SET / PRODUCTION DESIGN? Thanks in advance.

Peter Carr

1st & 2nd AD you can hire for $800 - $1,000 a week if you get 2nd & 3rd AD who want to upgrade, Hair/Make up/ Wardrobe - $750 a week, Prod, Designer-#1000-$1,200 per week, PM-$1000 per week. It depends on the project and these are just non union ball park figures

Thanks Peter, I appreciate the message.

On very low budget non union non guild it's a good idea to pay everyone the same to avoid problems. If not, make it clear at the beginning before you start production that not everyone is paid the same. My 2 cents.

As a makeup artist the rates can start as low as $250/day to a few thousand per day--depending on the budget, number of people makeup is needed, if there's a need for makeup effects. Also you need to put aside funds for the MUA's kit fee (which is the same as a rental fee). These are normally to different prices. I hope this helps.

Thanks Ken and Keisha for the helpful info.

No problem Don! I was glad to help and if needed as a makeup artist let me know.
