And we do it very differently from other festivals. We don’t chase money like Cannes and we don’t preview the upcoming blockbusters like Tribeca. We gather movies from around the globe that you won’t find anywhere else, movies that the world must see. We seek untold stories and unspoken voices--from horrors to documentaries to adventures to comedies, from great acting to anime. That’s how we discover the future stars. We’ve shown a documentary of the Fukushima tsunami, a deadly story of an unmarried relationship in Iran, a sci fi flick about artificial intelligence programs who fall in love only to lose each other, and a fantasy tale in which a werewolf and a ghost seek a fabled cure for their ailments in New York City. Every year we have a mix of movies from around the world — from India to Iran, from Russia to Argentina, and from Nepal to the USA. We have lots of panels where filmmakers speak about their works and receptions where we give out awards. There’s only one thing we don’t have lots of. Money. We run the festival with a dedicated team of volunteers, but renting theaters and equipment is expensive. And many filmmakers from developing countries don’t have the money to come to their own screenings. For some filmmakers even our low submission fees are an unsurmountable expense. Your contribution will sponsor their submissions or pay for selected filmmakers travel. Your donation will help us advertise films to distributors and the national networks. Your support will encourage student filmmakers and their dreams of taking the art to new heights. Why we do it? Every great filmmaker started as an indie. Spike Lee’s first student film was showcased in a New Director’s Film Festival. Kevin Smith’s first movie Clerks was discovered in the fifth year of Sundance. This is our fifth year and we will have a record breaking number of submissions, and we know there’s great talent there waiting to be discovered. With your help, we will discover the next Scorsese, Stallone, and Coppola. Film festivals are the best way for Indie filmmakers to reach large audiences and get the exposure they deserve. To bring them to the attention of distributors, as well as getting feedback and encouragement from their peers. What your donation will pay for? Indie filmmakers live on dreams and hope. They are the visionaries of tomorrow. Your contributions will help us bring those visions to you, to other fellow filmmakers and dreamers, and to the public! Your generous funding will help us pay for theater space, office space, screening equipment and advertisements. It will let us hire crews and technicians to film the festival events, and buy coffee for our volunteers who work long shifts making the festival happen.
