I've already learned quite a bit here. But since the business end is so complicated, I'm always wondering how important it is to be in one of the areas, L.A., N.Y., etc, where most of the deals are made.
I'd say it would be to your benefit to be in one of those places because it makes everything less difficult besides being far from those places and trying to make an impact. Best of luck Ed.
Well... People are social animals. Yes, the internet with blogs and message boards and places like Stage 32 can open up ones "connections", but people tend to hire people they spend time with. Yes, writers who have won awards or gotten a screenplay produced locally get some attention in LA and/or NY but you always hear that they go there for meetings. Even in the internet age that "see and be seen" meeting is important. You will find examples of writers optioning scripts from outside of the production hubs, so we all know it can happen. But when you look at the details of writers making their "first" sale you more often see previous work in the business. Meaning they live and work were movies are being made.

Yes, I agree with him. There are a lot of, it depends, but generally speaking, I've found it difficult to be out of the epicenters.
