Screenwriting : Literary agents by Gary O'Toole

Literary agents

I've pondered this one for a while, do I need one? I have my own production company, producing feature films and television series, all at various stages of development, I have 26, yes, 26 children's books being published and sold internationally this year, and I'm an independent screen writer, so do I need a literary agent? Could be? I LOVE what I do, truly adore every second, but whilst I embrace being my own boss and developing my own material. I've also been hired a few times to work on other peoples ideas, flesh them out, create a one sheet, a treatment, a script and I think I'd like to do this more and more. I don't mind doing the 'odd' favour to someone I think has 'it' but more and more I'd like to actually get paid (SHOCKER) especially as my 'stock' is raising, so do I NEED a literary agent? possibly not, but do I WANT one? …. I'm beginning to think I do.

At what point does wearing so many hats effect what you love to do most? I find it very difficult selling my works when all I want to do is write. You need someone who loves being a literary agent as much as you love to write.

I wouldn't want to work with anyone who has less passion about what I'm doing than I do. If that's the case, then they can walk on by.

If you're looking to weed out the work, an agent or manager would probably be helpful to you... or just a really good business partner that can say "no" more than you. :-D
