Introduce Yourself : Director of Photography & Filmmaking Mentor/Educator by Randolph Sellars

Randolph Sellars

Director of Photography & Filmmaking Mentor/Educator

Hi Everyone! I've been a DP for over 30 years. My passion is independent features. I've shot 23 features including 2nd unit work on "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead." I shot Bjork's first feature, "The Juniper Tree" in Iceland. It was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. One of my career highlights was filming the Dalai Lama for several days when he received the Congressional Medal of Honor. When you are near him, you can literally feel energy - almost like static electricity. I love any type of job that offers creative challenges. Budgets don't matter much to me - it's the concept, the writing, and the other creative collaborators. I also love teaching and mentoring emerging filmmakers. I have taught many classes and workshops for many years. I'm currently working on a course that teaches beginning filmmakers how to break into the industry and get freelance jobs - as well as strategize and work toward their dream job. Here is a trailer that I directed recently that I'm proud of: http://bit.ly/1lKkwSq Here is a very cinematic commercial that I recently shot: https://vimeo.com/89851203

Randolph - it's a pleasure to have you and your talents here on Stage 32. Congrats on all of your successes, however, wow, filming the Dalai Lama must have been amazing!! It would be great to see you more involved in the lounge and the discussions in there. Right now there are over 45,000 conversations going on about all aspects of the industry were people are connecting and collaborating. I think you'd fit right in with your background :)

The Mystery of Bonney's Canyon looks GOOD. I really enjoyed ... Now I want to see the entire thing.

Angela McEwan

Beautiful photography.

Amy Gaipa

I saw the Dalai Lama in Central Park when I was still in school! The energy I felt that day is still palpable when I reflect on that moment. Continued success in all your endeavors. It looks like you love what you do!

Neva J Howell

I shook his hand in Bloomington, Indiana one day. It felt like I was meeting a friend I'd known forever. What a blessing to have this man in the United States though I would wish for him to be back home in Tibet with the people who so miss him there.

Richard "RB" Botto

Quite impressive.

Thanks for your kind comments everyone. Amy and Neva, I'm so glad that you had the chance to see and meet the Dalai Lama. He is truly an inspiring teacher. I had a funny incident when the Dalai Lama first arrived at the hotel. I was trying to find a suitable position to film his arrival. I yelled at the director, "I think I can shoot the Dalai Lama from over here!" Next thing I know, a man in a dark suit, sunglasses, and an earbud is bearing down on me. "Oh shit." I quickly pulled my camera out of the bag and declared, "I mean photograph! I'm going to PHOTOGRAPH the Dalai Lama!" Lesson learned. Fortunately, I did not end up cuffed in the black van with tinted windows.
