Screenwriting : Jumping around by Ann Burr

Jumping around

Is it ok to have the story finished before the beginning and middle are written? I have my ending finished and am working on the beginning and middle. Or does it even matter as long as it gets finished and everything flows together?

Kerry Douglas Dye

When the juice isn't flowing I often write out of order. I'll even sometimes number the unwritten scenes and use a random number generator to pick the next scene for me to write. When writing is a slog, this seems to keep me motivated in a way that staring at a blank page 23 for four hours would not. Yes, this will make for a choppier first draft, but first drafts are always awful anyway. You'll be rewriting this so many times, why should it matter how you assembled it in any given early draft?

Chas Franko Fisher

Whatever it takes to get it written. There is no right way to write. Re-writing is a whole other kettle of fish... ;)

haha! Nice comments. Alle made a good point about having to change the ending if it doesn't fit after you've finished the beginning and middle. I've found that more and more the general public is becoming wise to the ways of film-making and don't take Deux Ex Machinas too kindly.

I write everything on paper first. so I can bounce around better. then put it together on Celtx.
