Filling the theatre - with shows AND with audience!

Good morning! I am the artistic director of a small theatre company that I founded in 2012. We're located in a college town (Columbia, MO), and so the vibe in town is liberal and very supportive of the arts. Live music and film rule the roost around here, but companies like mine are making great inroads for theatre. My company, Talking Horse Productions, produces small-cast shows in a black box setting, with representational sets, strong scripts, and powerful characters. We recently have produced SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD, an original script written by a local playwright called THE SUDDEN GLIDE, and GOOD PEOPLE. We also host touring shows, including this weekend's O'KEEFFE!, out of Dallas with Flower and Bone Productions and starring Carolyn Wickwire. We have our 2015 season chosen, and I'm currently putting together a 2016 possible slate. Life is busy, but good! I read new scripts all the time, and our company has produced several original works since we started. I miss acting and traveling, which is what I was doing before founding this company. I'm hoping that eventually I'll get to the point where I can occasionally take an acting contract and leave an assistant to keep the company going for short periods of time, but we're not there yet!

Ed...my apologies. I have yet been able to schedule a luncheon with you. "Belleville The Movie" just got picked up by Wehrenberg Theaters in 13 cities and 4 four states. I have chose to promote the Springfield MO Campbell 16 theaters as part of a promotion team. And, I just got cast for a new movie in Tucson..."The A'tahsaia Project". I have not forgotten. Thanks, Rick Jey

That's OK, Rick! Life has a way of getting very busy all at once, and we can either resist it or give in and ride the current! Best wishes on all your current and future projects, and we'll figure out a future meeting soon!

Rick Jey

Sounds Great Ed. I love to ride the current...the faster the better with a splash now and then...although not in a compulsive manner. Thanks for the best wishes. I have you now pinned on my bulletin board on the office wall. :)) I hope to schedule with you soon. Thanks for your understanding of life's flow. Rick Jey

I'm pinned on your office wall? I'm not sure what to think of that! LOL! -Ed

Rick Jey

LOL... that does leave a lot to the imagination. LOL!

Dear Ed... I joined Stage 32 just two days ago and somehow stumbled upon your post from two years ago. I had to respond because you mention Carolyn Wickwire. I recently worked with Carolyn on a short film called "Morris," written and directed by Nina Kotyantz. Carolyn was amazing--professionally and personally. She gives a sensitive and powerful performance in this beautiful short, which is now in post-production. I know that Nina (an incredible talent in her own right) searched far and wide for the right actress to play the lead in her directorial debut. For those who will be on the Short Film Festival circuit this Spring, I encourage you to keep an eye out for a "Morris" screening. Carolyn's performance should not be missed.

Ed I see that the Theater group has been busy this past spring. I am happy to see it going well. I have been busy mostly with commercial copy auditions and one movie that I play a grandfather in seeking funding. I did enjoy our lunch at The Heidleberg. I wish you continued success. Rick
