Hello, I'm a professor of politicial science and screenwriter. The problem is these people will not let anyone be JUST a writer. When I talk to people they always want me to bring someone incredible to the project. "This script will work with Robert Duvall. If you can get him on board its a go." What a loon!!! If I wanted to be a producer and package films, I would do that and NOT write. Here is the deal... Hollywood is full of a bunch of lazy assholes. Yep that is pretty damn negative! And it is the Assholes job to get Robert Duvall to sign. If the script is good enough to Duval to read and then play the role, then it aught to be valuable. But its not UNLESS you can bring the talent. Writers are expected to be an Agent and a Producer. I'm sick of people who are NOT artists making films. I understand, Duvall will bring an audience, but the producer seems to be saying the story will work. Robert Duvall, if you are reading this, love to have you but basically I'm not anyone unless you are onboard. Not only do I have to do my job and write a compelling story, but I must do their job too. Go figure. L @ www.magicalrealism.us

I'm wondering if calling all producers lazy assholes in public is a positive way to approach a career as a writer. Not all of them are. But I'll never convince you of that. I'll agree with you that the money people are not artists. Making a movie takes a lot of money. You can rail against that or you can accept it. I'm sure many writers share your frustration. I hope this post was cathartic for you. I wish you good journey.
I love the idea of "a company by the artists, for the artists". But someone must manage the money. And a company by artists for artists cannot afford to make every project every artist wants to make. So someone gets turned down. Once you muck through the mud and make the money to do it there will be people who will be disappointed that you didn't choose their script to make. Then it will be YOU telling the writer they need to bring more to the table than just a script.

Of course I would have some business people, the point is it won't be ALL about numbers. I plan on having a much more open process available to unknowns to help get talented artists working.
