Is a license or rights needed

I've written a fictitious story about a New York Jet football player. Does anyone know if I need to have permission to write such a character? Thanks for the insight.

You certainly don't need permission to write it. Knock yourself out.

Beth Fox Heisinger

Yup. The screenplay certainly could refer to the Jets, but if the film would ever come to fruition then you would have to seek copyright and trademark approval. Hell, if the story is great, perhaps the Jets would even help produce it? Maybe... right? :)

Thanks I like how you think Beth

And if it didn't work out, the producers would rename the team the New York Sharks. Totally something you don't need to worry about as a writer.
