Introduce Yourself : Living the Dream by Brian Steinmetz

Brian Steinmetz

Living the Dream

This is always my response when people ask me how I'm doing. Even though I'm constantly broke, underemployed, and drowning in education debts, I'm alive, writing and working with cameras everyday, and I'm in America. Yeah, I work in public access TV and I could make more as a wedding photographer. Yeah, I live in a tiny apartment with my wife and baby. And yeah, the rent's past due. But this is the dream. It's not a rags to riches story if you've got a trust fund. It's the journey that makes it the American Dream. I was lucky enough to be born in America, so crossing an ocean or a river isn't part of my story. My journey will be an economical one. And I don't want to be rich; that's the last thing on my mind. I just want to make my movies and make a decent living at it, so once every couple of years I can take my family on vacation. My American Dream is a revised, moderate, artist's dream. I just want to stop starving, that's all.
