NEVER talk with a distributor by yourself, always have an entertainment attorney who's experienced in negotiating deals with you. There are a few here on 32. Have you been on the festival circuit? If not, you should in order to garner reviews and to be viewed by acquisition execs. I know it cost time and money, but it's a worthwhile investment to build up your film's package. You'll be better positioned to sell your film.
Thanks!
Also Never tell anyone your actual budget that you spent making the film, especially not any distributors. They'll push you for it, they're trying to figure out the least amount to offer you, it's none of their business. The only people who needs to know the actual budget is you the producer and your investors. It's no secret many filmmakers are screwed on their first deal, that's just business to them. Insist on having a specific timeframe on contract for the distributor to promote and distribute your film, so if they don't live up to their end all rights return back to you as the filmmaker. Never accept world rights either, together with your attorney or sales agent, you'll make much more money selling off all the rights separately to different territories. I can't stress enough the importance of an entertainment attorney at this point for you.
splended work
I have added you, perhaps I can help you!
