SYNOPSIS:
This first episode of ten introduces the main characters of the Jolt Survival Series which is based on Roy’s award-winning Jolt Survival Trilogy. Mary Matters, the wife of Lou Matters, a nuclear engineer at a nearby nuclear power plant, worries about the possibility of a nuclear meltdown. Far away, in Lochlee, a small mountain village, Thaw, a struggling artist, attempts to confirm that Natalie, his girlfriend, is committed to their relationship. Both she and Thaw’s dad believe Thaw needs a more reliable source of income than that provided through art, preferably housebuilding. With the support of his friend, Lem, a fellow war veteran, Thaw manages to land a job teaching oil painting at a university an hour and a half south of Lochlee in Bixby, where his girlfriend Natalie is a city planner. The episode ends with nothing resolved in Thaw’s relationships despite the encouragement of his new position as a teacher and Mary having done her best in the face of the threat of a nuclear melt down, having provided potassium iodide tablets for her family to take to prevent cancer of the thyroid should a meltdown with nuclear fallout occur.
Among the 90 nuclear fission power plants in the United States, eight have experienced meltdowns. It is said that after a nuclear event, if one can walk away, one will live. A nuclear meltdown separates the Matters family and forced migrants fleeing fallout overrun a mountain village town where an artist struggles to establish himself professionally.
When the meltdown at Magdum Heights Nuclear Power Plant occurs, injury, radiation, loss of family contacts, and the effects of mass migration force people to respond quickly. Lovers forget their differences to respond to community needs. A father suffers traumatic brain injury. His wife is sprayed with fallout. Their sons take to the road to escape fallout. The residents of a small village set up a point of distribution to decontaminate, feed, house, clothe, and medically care for the hundreds of forced migrants.
