THE SACRED WITCH
By Madeline Gos Goshorn

GENRE: Historical, Comedy
LOGLINE:

A contemporary retelling of the story of Joan of Arc, in which our hero isn't a devout faith-driven follower but instead a passionate activist who lies in order for her voice to be heard in a time where no one would let a woman lead.

SYNOPSIS:

A satirical comedy feature retelling the story of Joan of Arc and her rise to glory and subsequent downfall.

We all know the story of Joan of Arc, who heard the voice of God and rose to legend leading the charge against the English invaders of France in the early 1400's. But what if that's just the story that's been passed down for generations? Maybe Joan was just like a lot of modern women, frustrated and unheard. Perhaps, she found a way to have her voice heard, by using the "voice of God."

Joan grew up feisty and unapologetic, always speaking her mind and standing up for what she believed in. And as she grew up, she was told more and more to shut up. Luckily she always had her timid friend Ruth who was there to support and comfort her.

But things boil over when Joan's father tries to marry her off at the age of 18. In fear of losing all autonomy in her life, she decides to speak in a way she knows people will listen: speaking as the voice of God.

After she tells the lie that could end her life, Joan continues to gain support by the hundreds through out the land of France. Eventually leading her to form a political alliance with the King of France. Joan has everything she could ever want: respect, choice, and an army to make the change she wants.

But of course a lie can't stay hidden forever. When it starts to slip that she may not be what she claims, Joan has to use her wits and close friends to stay alive in a world where so many people want to tear her down, figuratively and literally.

This feature is a fictional contemporary look at this historic figure, using the setting of 1400s France, but the modern-day issues of women in today's culture.
