Clara is an author troubled by dreams of Victorian woman, Sarah Elliott and her family who were murdered in a Mansion on an island in the middle of Goldwater lake in the picturesque Lake District, England. Writing a book about the woman’s story, Clara is desperate to discover who hanged Sarah from a tree in the garden and burnt her young family to death in a house fire, feeling a strong affinity with her. She does all she can to research the past but the recluse who owns the house refuses to allow her to visit. Her quest for information causes her to be haunted by James Hendrick, a violent male ghost from a past life in the wild west in the US who she learns raped Sarah and stalked her. Now haunting, Clara he will stop at nothing to prevent her from learning the truth about Sarah Elliott and killing her. But to her surprise she finds another male spirit equally determined to protect her and draw her in to his arms.

When the recluse suddenly dies, the island is bought by the mysterious American Billionaire, Brandon Clifford. He invites her to his new home to investigate the murders and hands her Sarah’s diary.

As Clara reads the diary, Sarah appears to her and leads her to the truth. Clara begins to see parallels with her own life and that there is a connection between herself and Sarah’s past. She also realises that there is more to Brandon Clifford than he is allowing her to see.

Determined to keep Clara close to him, Brandon prevents her from leaving the island. Sarah learns that he is the ghost of Sarah’s murdered husband, Nathan and she is Sarah.

Clara is unable to accept the truth and tries to escape the island once more but the ghost of Sarah refuses to let her go. She relives the murder and the fire with Brandon, and their young son. The only way to be free of James Hendrick is to let go of her past and the guilt of previous lives with him. With Brandon’s help, she is able to free herself and James Hendrick’s ghost is unable to haunt her anymore. Now the family is reunited, Brandon reveals that Clara is not truly alive. She died in a car accident a while ago and invented the world around her because she was not able to move on. This is what allowed Hendrick to pursue her. The family move on to a new future.
