GENRE: Romance
LOGLINE:

At a couple's engagement celebration, the groom's ex shows up as the waitress, reigniting sparks between them that threaten to burn the party down.

SYNOPSIS:

Anwar is an undocumented Jordanian working as a waiter at a French bistro in Manhattan where he meets Katya, who has lost faith in love since being dumped by her fiancé and now plans to marry the first decent eligible guy she finds. Anwar is also still hurting from his failed relationship with his enticing ex, Yasmine, who is now married. Although Katya and Anwar have tepid dates, when she starts seeing someone else and he realizes he could lose her, he spontaneously proposes and they get engaged. Anwar finds Yasmine at her catering company job to return a bracelet she gave him so he can fully move on. They fight and he leaves but not before the owner presses a brochure on Anwar, who casually tosses it on Katya’s desk at their home. Katya hires the company to cater their engagement party, and when Yasmine shows up as a serve, she and Anwar quickly make a pact not to speak for the rest of the night. But Anwar’s parents well remember Yasmine from when she dated their son, and adore her, so soon the secret is out. As Katya gets more and more drunk, bonding with the belly dancer, the party descends in to chaos, culminating when all the guests witnessing Anwar reconcile with Yasmine as their intimate conversation is broadcast to the families via a security camera. Realizing this, Anwar is horrified that he’s hurt Katya, whose uncle leaves to get the police to deport Anwar. Anwar’s parents badger him for being a failure, and he finally pushes back, then runs in to comfort Katya. Soon the former couple admits that they were not right for each other, except that they really did dream of starting a family together. Knowing he's about to be deported, Anwar says he can still be Katya’s sperm donor, and she accepts. Yasmine comes in to say that having realized she still loves Anwar, she’s ended her marriage. It's a crash of bittersweetness – he will have to leave the country just when they might have gotten together, and her sudden divorce means she can’t confer on him citizenship through marriage because it would be too suspicious. At least he stood up to his father, who had been controlling all of Anwar’s savings, which he’s now gotten back. Katya suggests that with that savings plus a bit more, they could bring Anwar back on an investor’s visa if he opens his own restaurant. Katya contributes the value of her ex-fiancé’s ring, which she’s happy to sell. Yasmine adds her savings. They go back out to announce the arrangement to the families, and Anwar’s grandmother, thrilled that he will soon be a father, contributes the rest needed for the visa. But Katya’s uncle returns to inform them he's just been to the police to report Anwar as an illegal immigrant. After a moment of fear, all soon realize that this is hardly unusual in New York and no one will be knocking on the door to arrest him. Anwar leaves voluntarily and returns with an investor’s visa. In the last scene, they are all at the new restaurant they opened together, Katya eight months pregnant with Anwar’s child, and Yasmine there as his partner. True to his new boldness, he stands up to a rude customer and defends a cowed waiter as they all celebrate their restaurant’s motto: eat well, laugh often and love a lot.
