A 12-year old runs away from home and into the United Nations, seeking refuge on its international territory, where she stumbles on a huge scandal and then becomes a global sensation.
SYNOPSIS:
Farrah Azouli feels free whenever she rides her skateboard; if only she could use it to run away from home, where her parents are always fighting. That’s impossible because her father is a New York City Police Officer who would easily catch her. But when her parents announce their divorce and tell Farrah she’ll have to change schools and move to Staten Island to live with her mother, Farrah becomes even more desperate to escape.
On a school trip to the United Nations, she learns that it’s international territory where local laws don’t apply and even her father’s badge is not recognized. She hides out at the UN, making friends with Henrik, the son of a high-level official who offers to help her survive. He thinks she’s escaping a terrible situation, and when Farrah stumbles on what she believes is a plot to profit off of war using a corrupt fundraiser, Henrik does everything he can to help her stop it.
Along the way, she posts her concerns to social media and amasses a huge following around the world. Suddenly everyone wants to know about the UN runaway and see her proof of corruption at the UN. Farrah’s parents try to get her out but the United Nations determines she has a right to stay based on the obscure principle of ‘extraterritoriality’ and won’t release her. Her parents go to the media, triggering panic at the Mayor’s office and in the US government. This only churns up more interest in Farrah, who continues to post updates for her growing fan base while using her wits to find ways to eat and places to sleep at the Parliament of Humanity, as the UN is known.
Farrah and Henrik manage to replace the promotional video being shown at the questionable fundraiser with one they make proving it’s all a fraud – but the day of the conference, she learns she’s made a huge mistake. Henrik is furious, especially when he finds out Farrah only moved into the UN to escape a new home in Staten Island, not because of any major suffering.
Farrah’s misguided video starts to play at the conference, which is broadcast live around the world. She’s never been so mortified, but the only way to fix this is to suffer even worse embarrassment, in front of the public, her friends and her parents. As fans cheer for the girl they think is a heroine, she has to admit her colossal mistake and try to make amends for the mess she’s created. It’s the hardest thing she’s ever had to do – but it opens a new perspective for Farrah, who discovers how to learn, listen and appreciate life no matter what her circumstances.
