SYNOPSIS:

For a young couple on a road trip to visit family, lunch at a busy Interstate rest stop turns into every parent’s worst nightmare when their 5-year-old child goes missing. Through quick action, they manage to catch the man who has their son, but in his rage the father beats the would-be kidnapper, only to be arrested for his actions, allowing the target of his fury to slip away into the crowd. The wife is left in the middle of unfamiliar surroundings with thoughts swirling and a husband headed to jail.

A call to her brother-in-law yields a local defense lawyer’s number, which leads to Sara and Jason’s reunion. In the days that follow, the man who stands accused of attempting to steal away their son resurfaces, reminding the family repeatedly of the threat he poses to the sanctity of their home. As a mother with heightened protective instincts, this proves too much for the woman to bear. Unable to stand the thought of a tragedy besetting the household, she pressures her husband to eliminate the threat.

In theory against the violence he feels welling up inside, Jason is a jumble of mixed emotions and conflicting impulses. When proof of a violation too grievous to be ignored appears in Caleb’s room, a tipping point is reached and plans are begun to kill the man who threatens to tear his family apart.

After a crash course in gun handling convinces the couple a long-distance assassination won't work, a close-range shooting is chosen. But when he ingratiates himself into the target’s home, it becomes quite uncertain to the young father just what motivates this lonely, awkward man who has consistently denied that he meant any harm.

Unsure all is as it seems, Jason pulls the plug on the preemptive murder, but Sara is hell bent on it happening, and so recruits her husband’s older brother to jump start the killing plot. The two men agree to take action and lay in wait to finish the deed, only the intended victim is on alert and will not be taken down easily nor quietly. In a final gambit to finish the job, in a rush for fear of witnesses, the older sibling is mortally wounded, leaving Jason and Sara to live with their culpability and sullied consciences.

Forgive Us Our Trespasses is based upon the question of how far down the path of violence parents should be willing to go to protect their loved ones. It is set in modern day, the locations are few, special effects minimal and the cast small.
