SYNOPSIS:

In Delford, NJ, siblings ANNIE, PETER, CASEY, and MICHAEL ROLAND attend a high school house party. Annie decides to go home, but because Michael is fending off a panic attack in the bathroom, she walks home. Annie is followed by a Man in Black who abducts her. Michael’s mother GINA and police chief BILL SCULLY find Annie's phone near the woods the next day. At Peter's lacrosse game, the Man in Black comes out of the woods and murders a child playing on the sidelines. The mayor closes the school and establishes a curfew until they apprehend the Man in Black, now called "The Cross Killer."

Michael’s crush MEGAN visits him and shows him her mother's research of the Cross Killer, connecting him to the massacre at the Blackwell Mansion in the 1920s. Megan later learns that the Man in Black is named "Xant" and had committed multiple murders in the 1800s. Peter and Casey refuse to believe them. Eventually, Annie reappears in a daze with her arms cut. She falls catatonic and is taken to the hospital, where Bill tells the Rolands there is DNA evidence that Annie is the Cross Killer. Michael refuses to believe this, and he blames himself for everything that's happened to Annie. When he is alone, Michael finds Annie awake, but Xant scares him out of her hospital room and flees with her. Michael pursues them to the Blackwell Mansion, where he is captured by Xant and several apparitions under the latter’s control.

The kids search for Michael at the mansion but are chased out by Xant. At the Roland house, Gina is attacked by a possessed Annie. The kids arrive just in time to save Gina and chase Annie away. The group returns to Blackwell and is ambushed by Xant. Michael frees himself from captivity to rescue them, but Xant traps them with his army of spirits. Michael lets Xant possess his body in exchange for everyone else's freedom. But Annie's spirit appears in Michael’s mind, encouraging him to keep fighting. Michael expels Xant from his body and destroys him after a brutal battle. The mansion collapses, and the group barely escapes with Annie alive. Michael wakes up in the hospital with his family, Rob, Megan, and Nick. Bill explains how Annie may be declared innocent with a psychological evaluation and everyone's testimony in court. Michael makes amends with the group and kisses Megan. Once Michael's left alone to recover, he smiles.
