THE NIGHT BEFORE THE NIGHT BEFORE

THE NIGHT BEFORE THE NIGHT BEFORE
By Paul Glen Neuman

GENRE: Fantasy, Family
LOGLINE:

After three hundred years on the job, Santa Claus sells all rights to his likeness to one of the world's largest online retailers, and retires to rural Fillmore, California where nothing goes according to plan.

SYNOPSIS:

"The Night Before The Night Before" is similar in spirit to such films as "The Santa Claus" and "Elf."

After more than three hundred years on the job, Santa Claus accepts an offer from one of the world's largest online retailers to sell his likeness and all North Pole operations effective immediately.

Once the deal is completed and Santa signs on the dotted line, his elation at having made the lucrative deal turns to despair thanks to being served divorce papers by his wife Kat Claus.

When the dust finally clears, Santa's financial situation barely leaves enough for transportation to where he has chosen to enjoy his golden years: Fillmore, the Last, Best Small Town in Southern California.

Unfortunately, once he arrives in Fillmore, along with Larry, his Head Elf, Santa quickly discovers that no one he encounters is happy to see him.

And why should they be? To the disappointed adults and angry children, Santa is a sell-out. Instead of Santa bringing their gifts on Christmas Eve, they now endure impersonal drones zig-zagging overhead, making deliveries round-the-clock.

From squaring off against former department store/mall Santa's legally forbidden to portray Santa without getting sued, dealing with restaurants that won't provide food, seeking lodging in a motel whose management wants nothing to do with him, and getting turned away by a local realtor who won't even allow him to fill out an application for one of their rentals, Santa's world has never looked so bleak.

Which is when Santa's ex-wife shows up, having squandered what she won in their divorce settlement, looking for a way to snake her way back into his heart.

Is Santa really a sell-out? He certainly doesn't think so. Is there a way Santa can redeem himself in the eyes of Fillmore's citizens? He comes up empty on that answer, too.

Ultimately, with Christmas morning two days away, Santa is determined to put things right.

Wearing his red velvet suit and snowy white beard may be against the terms of the legally binding sale of his North Pole operations, but at the end of the day, he's still the one person uniquely qualified to make Christmas dreams come true.

He's the one and only Santa Claus.
