GENRE: Drama, Thriller
LOGLINE:

An EMT has 72 hours to kill the 5 heart recipients ahead of her dying mother to save her life

SYNOPSIS:

Abagail Barris is a resolutely confident, 30-year-old, EMT. She was adopted by Grace Barris, who is dying from heart failure. At the scene of a deadly car accident, Abagail has an opportunity to get Grace a heart. This attempt fails and it goes to someone else on the list.

Grace’s health is dire. A serious medical episode leaves Grace with just 72 hours in which to get a heart transplant. This awakens Abagail’s fear of abandonment. She appeals to Grace’s doctor to move her to the top of the heart recipient’s list. He cannot. Abagail takes matters into her own hands and calls UNOS(United Network of Organ Sharing) herself. She pleads with them to move Grace to the top of the list. They will not. She asks for the names of those ahead of Grace, and they will not give them to her. Only with a warrant can the names be released.

Abagail goes to her friend and mentor, Karin Macadam, a sarcastic 43-year old homicide detective. Karin rehabilitated Abagail from a life on the street and drug addiction, instead of throwing her in jail. She was the inspiration for her “felons and mentors” criminal support program. Karin will not just get a warrant. Abagail does the unthinkable and she steals Karin’s detective badge and makes a fake warrant.

Now, armed with the list of recipient’s names, Abagail assumes a fake identity. She appeals to the five recipients to let Grace go ahead of them and they all say no.

Abagail makes it to her evening class, where she is studying to be a paramedic. One of her classmates is caught cheating off her final exam and both are kicked out. She confronts her classmate and accidentally kills her. This triggers something in Abagail and she devises a sinister plan. Kill the five heart recipients ahead of Grace.

Abagail scores Ketamine from a former junkie friend. Her first murder is Jasmine. She injects her with a lethal dose of Ketamine in a diner bathroom. Then she sneaks into a plumbing warehouse and murders Steve, a paraplegic, by injecting him with the same drug. Karin is investigating the murders and makes the Ketamine connection, yet her emotional attachment to Abagail blinds her from seeing she is the likely suspect.

Abagail kills the third recipient, Susan. There are witnesses but they cannot clearly see her. This incident scares her, she needs to talk to someone. She goes to talk to her aunt Jocelyn. Jocelyn reveals that she is not her aunt, but really her birth mother. This betrayal confuses and paralyzes Abagail and she stops her killing spree. She sees a mother escorting her delinquent daughter down the precinct steps, and recollects how Grace stood by her through all her transgressions. She decides to kill the remaining two heart recipients.

When Karin finds out that the three victims needed heart transplants, she reluctantly admits that Abagail is likely the serial killer. She recruits police officers to do surveillance on the remaining 2 recipients.

Abagail’s penultimate murder is, Fiona, a college classmate and mother to a 9-year-old daughter. She does not have her Ketamine syringe and suffocates. Fiona’s daughter witnesses the murder. The surveillance cops do not arrive in time to save Fiona. They shoot at Abagail as she flees the scene.

Her final kill is aboard Jared’s houseboat. Abagail battles with Jared and his boyfriend, murdering him as Karin arrives. A devastated Karin waits for her on the pier and arrests her. Karin interrogates her and she once again lets her emotions blind her and Abagail escapes.

Abagail goes to hospice where Grace is spending her final hours, knowing Jocelyn would be there with her sister. Her plan is to kill Jocelyn so Grace could get her heart. Karin foils her murderous attempt. Out of options and out of time, Abagail decides death is better than living without Grace. She injects herself with a lethal dose of Morphine, committing suicide.

Karin, Jocelyn, and Grace, now with Abagail’s heart, attend Abagail’s funeral. They each privately mourn the loss of their beloved and troubled friend and daughter.

Back at the precinct, Karin resumes her serial killer investigation, when she makes a significant personal admission. She can no longer work investigations alone. Karin fights back her guilt at believing she was responsible for her original partner’s death. She goes to her chief and requests a new partner to work the case with her.
