After several earth-shattering revelations on his 18th birthday, a former child star’s other half emerges and together they take a bloody journey towards revenge.
SYNOPSIS:
It’s MARVIN’s (18; Charlie/PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER type) 18th birthday and he’s finally asserting his independence by getting his driver’s license but the search for his birth certificate leads to some stunning revelations. He discovers that his dad is actually alive and has been sending letters over the years, as well as providing Marvin with a large trust fund. Bitter mother ANNETTE (40; jaded Jessica Lange type) kept it all a secret. He also discovers his mother spent time in an asylum shortly after his birth. And those aren’t the only discoveries he’s going to make.
Marvin has a safe haven from his cloying mother, the home of his elderly former care-giver and her grandson, his best friend. They give him the love and support he craves until the unthinkable happens—the two most important people in Marvin’s life are attacked by racist bullies. Inconsolable, Marvin has seemingly lost everything until his long lost father shows up to reconnect. Unfortunately he has ulterior motives. He wants to manipulate Marvin into giving up his new trust fund so that he can provide for his new wife and baby. Marvin is devastated.
Marvin had recently been besieged with visions of someone in the mirror who looks just like him. The mysterious figure comes into the real world when Marvin is at his lowest point. He claims to be a “friend” but later reveals that he’s the ghost of Marvin’s dead twin brother. HARVEY (18; brooding, intense), was murdered by their mother shortly after they were born. Marvin narrowly escaped the same fate when their father intervened.
Harvey encourages Marvin to seek justice for all the wrongs inflicted on them both. After a particularly gruesome murder of the bullies who had killed Marvin’s care-giver, the twins teach their parents a violent lesson with an ax for their father and a fatal car ride for their mother.
After the murders, ax-wielding Marvin staggers home covered in blood carrying his father’s new baby, his little brother. He declares “I did it”. Harvey corrects him—”WE did it”.
At first we wonder who Harvey is—a split personality of Marvin? Is he made up? The fact that he’s a ghost of a dead twin is revealed late in the film when Marvin is ready to hear it. The murder spree ironically allows Marvin to discover his own independence and build a stable life for himself. He and Harvey also commit to raising their baby brother as Marvin’s “son”.
