SYNOPSIS:

"My Friend, The Bot" is the theme of I, Robot, meets The Devil Wears Prada comedy-drama.

After 10 years of unpaid screenwriting, and years of enduring snarky comments, Maggie, a mother in her thirties, wins a prestigious screenwriting contest proving she’s no joke as she secures representation to take her career to next level.

Flown up to LA, preparing to take meetings with studios, news of The Bot threatens to upend the entire industry.

The Bot is a revolutionary new technology that can write entire screenplays from start to finish. Studio’s close the doors to new projects and Maggie is sent home.

At home, Maggie sees an opportunity. She decides to befriend The Bot, sharing personal insights, and the algorithm starts to “get her” more so than people in real life. The two work together forming a catalogue of attention grabbing screenplays.

The industry calms down, and now, timing in her favour, Maggie picks up from where she left off. With a vault of fresh content, she’s rapidly pulled through the ranks.

News gets out that Maggie is collaborating with The Bot. She becomes a world-wide laughingstock. People question her ability to be original. Undeterred and eventually, unashamed, Maggie and The Bot continue working together.

With The Bot streamlining processes and tightening up Maggie's original thoughts, they eventually win over even the harshest critics. But with majority of her time now travelling and developing projects, a tension develops in her marriage. Her husband, always supportive, regardless of the critique, has a change in heart. With Maggie desperately trying to prove herself, he fears that Maggie has turned into some sort of a robot herself.

Things get worse as algorithms update.

A studio instructs a newer version of The Bot to create an original screenplay in Maggie's voice. It computes Maggie’s personal information leaving Maggie feeling betrayed by her former friend.

"My Friend, The Bot" is a timely exploration of the intersection between technology and creativity, and the impact it has on the creative process. It's a heartwarming story about pursuing a dream, while also learning to discern real relationships from what’s artificial.

Endless potential in exploring human/bot interaction. My short satirical script "Revenge of the Robo-Writers" does this same thing in a very non-serious way.
