FOOTSTEPS IN THE DARK
By James Earl

GENRE: Drama, Crime
LOGLINE: A Vietnam vet-turned-private detective is hired by the LAPD to sabotage three rivals probing the truth behind the deadly May 1974 SLA shootout.

SYNOPSIS:

Nate Maloney, a Vietnam vet with multiple confirmed kills and a chest full of medals, struggles to fit back into a world that hardly understands him. He’s a decorated hero, yet society’s sideways glances turn his pride to bitter resentment, casting a shadow over his quiet, childless marriage. Years drift by until Nate finds himself caring for Phil Poitier, his old war buddy, now ravaged by cancer likely spawned by wartime toxins. Phil's haunted by guilt from the Agent Orange attacks he once partook in. Desperate for a cure, Phil falls in with dangerous characters, worsening his plight. Driven by a sense of duty, Nate steps in to help. Once brushing shoulders with the LAPD, Nate is pulled into a clandestine job by Assistant Chief Bradford. His mission: undermine three private eyes snooping into the controversial 1974 SLA shootout, a murky FBI-LAPD affair. Viewing the killing of hippie terrorists as a positive, Nate accepts the deal. But as Nate delves deeper, he unearths cracks in the official story. Conversations with witnesses and fellow investigators plant seeds of doubt about the LAPD and FBI’s account. Phil, leaning on his chemistry background, aids Nate in debunking claims, like the far-fetched idea that machine guns melted in the infamous fire. Confronted by this new reality, Nate’s growing skepticism forces him to retread his understanding of loyalty and patriotism. Set against the gritty, tumultuous backdrop of 1975 Los Angeles, Nate wrestles with uncomfortable truths, discovering that real clarity begins with confronting hard facts.
