IDEAL BEGINNINGS

IDEAL BEGINNINGS
By Mike Rembis

GENRE: Thriller, Film-noir
LOGLINE:

When an introductory service that scams rich clients signs a psychopathic lawyer who kills his dates, they must hide his crimes as well as their own.

SYNOPSIS:

Early 1990’s. Before internet dating boomed dating services had libraries of head shots and VCR tapes to help a hopeful single find a match.

The crew at IDEAL BEGINNINGS take matchmaking seriously and raise it to a whole new level. They match up wealthy, lonely men with women who tap into their bank accounts and disappear, never leaving a trace of their crime in connection to Ideal Beginnings.

It is a legitimate operation out front. SUSAN, the lead counselor, assists walk-ins looking for a match. Junior counselors JESSICA and NICOLE pick up the slack when the library gets busy. ROBIN is executive secretary and girlfriend to KEN, owner of Ideal Beginnings (IB), who keeps an eye on the back door and casts the “actors”, a parade of high end call girls and con men who troll for big fish. Once a mark is invited to join IB the dating begins, reconnaissance uncovers bank account numbers, money is transferred, hearts are broken, and everyone moves on.

To catch their prey they host dances, complete with both guests who are real clients and actors. The office is housed on the second floor of a two story building in a quiet corner of downtown. Security is high. Ken’s office is protected by a magnetic lock. Cameras cover every entrance, room and elevator and are monitored from inside Ken’s office.

DEWEY sells sports cars and recruits wealthy men to join IB. He sells a car and recruits criminal defense attorney CURTIS REDD, a quirky, compulsive man. No sooner does Dewey give Ken the heads up on Curtis Redd than they spy him on the monitor walking in the door to join IB.

The con is on. They set him up with MICHELLE to play the role of WHITNEY. A few dates in Michelle/Whitney finds herself in a silly argument with Curtis as he accuses her of trying to steal his money and strangles her to death.

Curtis calls on thug MAX to dispose of her body. Max does so, but scolds him for killing yet another woman and tells Curtis it has to stop.

Curtis returns to IB to peruse the library, saying it didn’t work out with Whitney and he is ready to move on. Ken and the girls are suspicious that they have not heard from Michelle/Whitney but don’t suspect Curtis of anything, thinking she may have stolen something and cut them out.

Curtis picks SARAH, a woman from the library catalogue he wants to meet and they alter Nicole to look like her. The crew is undecided about how well the disguise works until another IB member, FRED, walks

in and recognizes Nicole as Sarah.

Nicole/Sarah goes to meet Curtis and is never heard from again. They know Curtis Redd is worth 20 million dollars because Nicole pulled four account numbers before disappearing, however, they never achieved a

score. Ken and Robin suspect Nicole of taking the money and running as they believe Michelle did.

Now they bring in DEBBIE to haul in Curtis Redd once and for all. Her mission is to pose as SANDRA and

merge money from four accounts into one in the Cayman Islands.

As they stand outside a theater, Curtis and Debbie are forced into a limo by MAX’s GOONS. He threatens Curtis and throws Debbie out of the car, telling her to forget his face and telling Curtis “This has to stop.

This is an intervention.”

Debbie runs to IB and tells Ken and the crew what happened to Curtis and that before he was taken, she made the bank transfers.

Max delivers Curtis to IB and gives him a length of cord as he exits the limo. Curtis surprises everyone when he emerges from the elevator. Debbie/Sandra rushes to him. He assures her that everything is fine and

apologizes to Ken for upsetting business at IB. Curtis asks for a moment with Sandra and the crew retires to Ken’s office.

The library monitor shows Curtis and Debbie talking and as the crews attention drifts away from the screen, Curtis strangles Debbie/Sandra. Ken notices first and runs to her aid, but is no match for psychotic

Curtis Redd and is knocked out quickly.

Curtis then attacks the other women and hunts down Robin who is locked in Ken’s office. He screams like a madman about people trying to steal his money and how they run an unethical business. He has completely snapped and barely making sense. He doesn’t give any true indication that he knows he was actually robbed, he is simply acting like a greedy, dangerous lunatic.

He also subdues and strangles Jessica and Susan. With Robin trapped in Ken’s office, he goes up on the roof and attempts to get in through the ledge. As he comes through the window, Robin throws a phone book at him and he falls to his death.

Later, Max, Dewey and Robin gather together to split the loot. Max was the mastermind who got him to

Dewey in the first place, knowing that he was killing the women and in the end, he was truly crazy and would snap. Max used IB to get the money. Dewey was cutting out IB altogether, except for Robin.

Surprise! She shoots Max and Dewey so she won’t have to split with them.

She takes all the money and runs off to be with Ken.

They live happily ever after.
