In "The Not So Grim Reaper" the protagonist, Luke Scythewinder is being prepared by his family to take on the Reaper Exams, a daunting task that will evidence if a young skeleton is ready for their role as a grim reaper. Notably greater in size than him is his competitor Chaos Grim, who takes pride in the task, unlike Luke.
During written exams, Luke barely manages to pass, only to move on to the Reaper Games, a practical test in which he must reap the soul of Chara Kind, a young girl marked for an unfair death by a terrorist attack. Seeing her innocence, Luke grapples with his morals and the expectations set by his family.
The situation escalates when Luke decides to heal and resurrect Chara instead of reaping her soul, breaking the oldest law of their underworld. Despite the dangerous path he now treads on and the wrath of the powerful Grim Reaper, Luke stands by his actions, even as Chaos Grim threatens to to reap Chara’s soul and instead, he uses his powers to heal and resurrect her, violating one of the underworld's oldest laws. As a result, he incurs the wrath of the powerful Grim Reaper and the menacing Chaos Grim. Despite these threats, Luke remains steadfast in his decision, leading to an uncertain and dangerous future as he faces the consequences of his actions.
