DAN OVERLAND
By Jay Hodgkins

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

Dan's a "motivational doer" with two prosthetic legs. When the wounded vet's van breaks down in front of a bougie SoCal home, the suffering suburbanite inside has no idea he's about to start an overlanding adventure to rediscover his true Prince-impersonating, Harry Potter fanatic self.

SYNOPSIS:

MICHAEL looks like he has it all. A nice house in sunny Southern California. A successful business hiring out celebrity impersonators. A beautiful wife. But the Quidditch World Cup trophy on the mantle, Harry Potter figures in the basement, and pictures of his old Prince cover band on the walls hint at the truth he’s no longer living the life he wants to live.

DAN’s busted-up camper van breaks down in front of Michael’s bougie suburban home just as things are falling apart inside. INES storms out on her checked-out husband, leaving an awkward first encounter between Michael and Dan, who asks if he can park outside a while. As days go by, it becomes increasingly apparent Dan’s in no hurry to fix the van and move on. Camp chairs and a grill show up in the front yard. Dan’s dog GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER (aka Gee Dub), who lives on an exclusive diet of peanut butter, turns the lawn into his personal toilet. But Michael can’t bring himself to ask the quirky war veteran with two prosthetic legs to leave.

Dan’s a “motivational doer” — a self-help guru who takes war vets struggling with mental health on long overlanding trips in his van to help them reacclimate. When Dan learns of Michael’s forfeited dreams and desire to go to LeakyCon, the annual convention for Harry Potter fans, he decides Michael needs a little motivational doing in his life. Michael finally relents, and the two set sail on an episodic odd couple road trip to LeakyCon in Portland.

Over the course of two weeks, Michael rock climbs in Joshua Tree and is visited by a vision of his idol Prince while tripping on shrooms for the first time. He’s left to survive in Death Valley with nothing but a six pack of Clamato. He gets up close and personal with a bear in Mammoth Lakes, drawn to camp by Dan’s habit of spreading garlic powder to ward off vampires. He helps Dan narrowly escape a close encounter with the local chapter of the KKK in the high desert of northeast California. It’s all part of “the process,” according to Dan, to help Michael let go, lose his fear, sweat out the impurities, cleanse his soul and experience explosive change.

When they finally arrive at LeakyCon, Michael feels transformed. But when he gets the chance to meet EMMA WATSON, the chronic fainter has an episode that leaves the actress’s nose busted and Michael certain he’s the loser he always feared he was. Michael schedules a flight home, but has a change of heart at the last moment. Dan, who never had a doubt, concocts a plan to get the two into the Yule Ball VIP section where Michael can get a second chance to meet Emma. Dressed in his finest formal wizard robes, Michael impresses Emma when Dan gets him on stage with the wizard rock band to perform Prince’s “Purple Rain.” After a wild night full of butterbeers and the transformational journey that preceded it, Michael finally feels confident being his true Prince-impersonating, Harry Potter-loving self.
